Q. Hunter, what a way to finish the weekend, 63 yesterday, 64 today, knocked it right up there on number 18. You gotta be pleased the last 36 holes. Actually the whole tournament is very successful.
HUNTER MAHAN: Yeah. Played well on the weekend. Kind of found my putter, found the speed of the greens a little more and able to make some putts, because I hit it pretty good the first two days. I just didn’t get much out of my rounds.
Q. It’s just such a great venue for you. You always seem to do so well here. The fans go crazy for you. You must be comfortable.
HUNTER MAHAN: Yeah. It’s a great place. From the GHO to Travelers taking…

Hunter Mahan’s best memories happen in Connecticut.
Mahan was 17 when he, as the junior amateur champion, received a sponsor’s exemption for the 1999 Greater Hartford Open.
It would be eight years before Mahan would truly succeed at TPC River Highlands, winning a playoff in 2007 to win the Travelers Championship title — his first as a professional.
The win came after a tie for second in 2006. He was runner-up last season, a stroke behind Stewart Cink.
“That gives me confidence,” Mahan said. “I know I can put a good round together and go low [today].”
How much lower he can go is uncertain. Playing mostly without wind and with softer greens after Friday’s heavy rains, Mahan relied upon a string of birdies from…

Hunter Mahan finished at even par and tied for sixth place in the 2009 U.S. Open after hitting a 72 in Monday’s final round at Bethpage Black.
Mahan was one of only eight players to finish at even par or better on the tournament, sitting in a three-way tie with Tiger Woods and Soren Hansen. He finished four strokes behind tournament winner Lucas Glover.
The day came down to a number of close calls for Mahan.
Sitting just one stroke behind the leader on the par-4 16th, Mahan was sitting pretty on the fairway after his tee shot. His next shot looked to set him up nicely on the green for a birdie, but hit the flag stick square on, putting him…

HUNTER MAHAN: You can make birdie. But make bogeys on one bad shot. 5, 6-under is possible out there. We have to be patient and hit a lot of good shots.
Q. When you have one or two guys as far out as Barnes and Glover were to start the day, do you just tell yourself they have a lot of inexperience and hang in there? What’s the attitude?
HUNTER MAHAN: They have a lot of holes, just like everybody. So just gotta keep playing, especially on this golf course. Every hole is tough. Every hole has double or bogey. You’ve got to be so patient out here. Because the greens are rolling true, they’re rolling good. You can make some putts…

After making himself a well-known name on the PGA Tour, Hunter Mahan is ready to make his biggest statement yet at the U.S. Open.
Mahan is coming off a tie for 14th at the Memorial and is one of the most consistent players out there, having made all 14 cuts this year. He was even picked to win the U.S. Open by Golfweek’s Sean Martin.
“I think Bethpage can suit him because you’re going to have to hit it straight and long off the tee, and he does that real well,” said Sean Foley, his swing coach. Mahan is 13th on Tour in total driving this season. “Plus he’s a real good mid- to long-iron player.”
Hunter has already finished in the…
