Caddies Corner - Introduction

Well, here we go again…..for all you Hunter MaFans out there, this year must seem like a carbon copy of last year!
What was a fairly lackluster year to this point, a year of “almosts,” got kick-started with a top 20 finish at The U.S. Open, and nearly another win
at The Travelers Championship in Hartford. Hunter is hitting it great again, the putter has come alive, and we are ready for another
summer run.

Hello out there everyone. My name is John Wood, and I am Hunter’s caddie of 3 years. I’ve been caddying on the PGA Tour now for 11 years
for players such as Kevin Sutherland, Mark Calcavecchia, Chris Riley, and now Hunter. What started as something I thought would be fun
to do for a couple of years while I figured out what I wanted to do with my life has become the thing that I want to do with my life. Funny how things
work out.

Like I said before, Hunter is really starting to hit his stride this year after a fairly slow start. We are both looking forward to some fantastic tournaments
at some challenging courses (Hunter’s specialty) coming up…The AT & T Classic at Congressional, followed by a week off, then The Open Championship
at Royal Birkdale, The Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, The PGA Championship at Oakland Hills, then we are rolling into the Playoffs. All great tournaments,
all demanding courses, and we will be on the first tee of each and every event with one thing in mind. Win the tournament. Hunter is ready to
win again, and hungry, and I think he is the type of player who excels as the courses get tougher.

So, I will be updating the Caddie Corner weekly as soon as the tournament ends, so I hope you enjoy a little look into life as a caddie on The PGA Tour,
the best seat in the house.

Thanks for reading

John

Yes, I’m interested in updates!

What’s up john? Ive been following the p.g.a tour for years… I am an avid golfer here in sac. Your name came up recently when i was working for the Winchester country club here in auburn. A couple of the pros up here new kevin S. pretty well and your name came up. To much of my surprise it was the john wood from foothill high. I graduated in the class of 88’ if you remember. I know we had a few run ins and some pick up hoop games back in the day.. I am so happy to see your doing so well on the tour. How awesome it must be to run with such an amazing group of professionals… I remember my dad use to always see your dad in crossing at andrea and diablo.. Well enough for now, Its pretty cool to know someone on the tour. K.I.T. my friend JOE PECK 916-532-2841

Dear John,
I would like your opinion on some caddie gear. In mid March I am going to St. Andrews, Scotland to caddie for a year and I need to purchase new rain/foul weather gear that is appropriate for all the climates. The only gear I’m familar with is the mid line Foot Joy stuff and I’m worried that it is not warm enough for early spring and late Fall/Winters on the North Sea. Some of the players I know that have visited Scotland say the FJ stuff is “good enough” but they are looking at the uses from a player’s perspective..Have you had any experience with the Sunderland gear or the high end FJ stuff? Any suggestion you might have would be appreciated. It is not that “money is no object”....I would like to get the best stuff I can afford…You know how miserable a caddie can get during a round with the wrong equipment on. Good Luck up at Pebble this week….I hope it is all blue sky and a gentle breezes. I also hope that I will get a chance to attend Turnberry this year. All my best to you and Hunter on the West Coast Swing.

Do you know where I can find David and Sons Jumbo Sunflower Seeds? Also, my son Eric is a big fan of Hunter’s. We hope to see both of you at the AT&T. Good Luck! Lorraine.

I just returned home from a great day of Golf at Valhalla. The Americans did it and with alot of help from Hunter. I was talking him up and he made me look like I knew what i was talking about. I also had some champagne pured on me and a high five from Hunter as the golfers celebrated at the club house. Go USA and have a hope we see it again in 2010 in Wales!!!!

John:
Quik note to, once again, say thank you for the experience of a lifetime last week in Boston. You and Hunter made me feel right at home, well sorta, and I appreciated every yard of the TPC Boston course we walked together. Most importantly, congratulations on the selection to the Ryder Cup Team. Keep in touch and best of luck.

My wife and I would just like to thank you and Hunter for the generosity and kindness that you both showed my son “Hunter” yesterday at The Bridgestone Invitational. He was so thrilled to find a “cool” golfer who has the same name as he does and then to get his ball topped it all off. He also has the Gatorade bottle that you gave him on his desk in his room, because he had to save it. I realize that being a professional athlete, the fans can be annoying at times, but I wanted to let you both know that you gave a lasting memory to my son that he won’t soon forget. Hopefully, I’ll be able to bring him back next year or to another tournament so he can say hi again.

Thank you again!

Sincerely,
John, Amanda & Hunter Andrey

I finally discovered Hunter’s website! He’s my Man and I have been following his career every inch of the way since I worked w/ his mom at Nordstrom. From what I have been reading it appears that you are part of his success. I loved your exchange w/ him on club selection at the end of last year’s Traveler’s. TV picked it all up and he certainly committed himself to the club selection and the shot! They called that finish one of the best in golf. Calc is one of my heros as well. How was it baggin for him? Little different personality than Hunter! When do you leave for The Open and what are the plans for prep?

BR and continued success, JJ
