PGA star Mahan returns to O.C. to give back

Monte Mahan of Coto de Caza vividly remembers the first time his now-famous son beat him on the golf course. It was at Alta Vista Country Club in Placentia, where he taught Hunter how to play the game from the rough.
“He was 12 years old,” Monte said, smiling. “He shot 72 and I shot 73. And he was so excited, jumping around the house (saying), ‘I beat Dad, I beat Dad.’ He still has that scorecard. It’s framed in his office at home.”

Father and son were back at Alta Vista on Monday, where Hunter, now 29, was honored at a luncheon for his personal accomplishments and charitable contributions to the community. He has served as honorary chairman for the club’s annual “Tee it up for the Troops” charity tournament, which in five years has raised $750,000 for charities benefiting America’s Wounded Warriors and their families.

Hunter and wife Candy were seated at a table with several members of the USMC Wounded Warrior Battalion at Camp Pendleton, and Mahan thanked each of them for their service to the country.
“This is truly a sense of community,” he said of the gathering at Alta Vista. “It’s great we can all come together and help so many people.”
It is not well known that Mahan was born in Orange (St. Joseph Hospital) and lived his first 13-plus years in Orange, attending St. John’s Lutheran School (preschool to eighth grade) until the family moved to Dallas in 1996.
