Mahan Makes His Mark at U.S. Open

Hunter Mahan finished at even par and tied for sixth place in the 2009 U.S. Open after hitting a 72 in Monday’s final round at Bethpage Black.

Mahan was one of only eight players to finish at even par or better on the tournament, sitting in a three-way tie with Tiger Woods and Soren Hansen. He finished four strokes behind tournament winner Lucas Glover.

The day came down to a number of close calls for Mahan.

Sitting just one stroke behind the leader on the par-4 16th, Mahan was sitting pretty on the fairway after his tee shot. His next shot looked to set him up nicely on the green for a birdie, but hit the flag stick square on, putting him in an unfortunate position.

“I hit that thing pretty hard and it ricocheted off the green,” Mahan said. “That happens. It’s a U.S. Open. You’re going to get stuff like that. The green is just fast. I thought I hit a pretty good 5-wood runner up there, but the green was pretty fast.”

The outing marked another strong performance at golf’s highest level for Mahan, something he is becoming quite accustomed to. This was Mahan’s third-straight top 20 finish in the Open.

He also finished tied for 10th at the Masters in April.

Repeatedly finishing in the top tier has prepared Mahan for a breakthrough performance.

“I feel I can win any major,” Mahan said. “I’m a good ball striker, good driver of the ball. When I get my putting up on those kind of standards, I feel I can win any tournament.”

Great to see you do so well at the Open Hunter. What a bad break on 16! I was with you at the Players Championship Pro-Am event in May. I was the host and my guest was Howard Belford. You guys won the event and we really enjoyed the whole day with you and your caddie. Best of luck and hope to see you next year at The Players.

Hey Hunter, Great job this week. You’re my favorite golfer on tour and I was really pulling for you this week. You actually talked to my dad just before leaving the course today. He’s volunteering at the Travelers Championship. I’ll be there following you. Good luck the rest of the season!!
